Cheers to 2013!

It's December 31st and we're just shy of ringing in the New Year!

This year flew by for our family, as shown in the lack of blog posts I was able to write - we were busy.  Due to my lack of documentation, I'd thought that I would share our family's annual report: the Christmas letter...that was sent after Christmas.

Dear Family & Friends,

We hope this letter finds you in good health and good spirits!  We are doing well, although sleep deprived.

Our exciting news of 2013 is that we made an addition to our family.  Grayson was born on on Black Friday – just day shy of his due date on Thanksgiving Day.  He weighed 8 lbs. and was 21 ½ inches long.  In just the few weeks that he has been in our arms he has changed so much.  We are soaking in the newborn stage as much as we can.

This farming season, while pregnant, Dana began to work full-time as a farmhand in addition to her traditional farm-wife duties of packing meals, mowing the lawn and giving rides to the field.  On any given day you could find her driving tractor: rolling soybeans, spreading dry fertilizer on wheat or corn, driving the grain cart, or pulling the vertical tillage disc.  During corn harvest she even ran the combine for a day!  She continues to do the bookkeeping for our operation.

In mid November, at 37 weeks pregnant, we had wrapped up corn harvest and Dana got to step out of the tractor.  We were thankful to be done before the baby arrived and snow came!  We put up two new grain bins this summer, more than tripling our on-farm grain storage capacity.  Now that they've been filled, they need to be emptied.  Travis will continue to haul grain to the elevator throughout the winter along with working in the tax office again.  Dana will enjoy her “maternity leave.”

Charlie is 4 ½ years old and Levi is 2 ½ years old.  It is amazing how much they have grown in the past year!  In January they started going to daycare three days a week while Dana and Travis were working in the tax office.  Once spring came they stayed in daycare while Dana worked alongside Travis in the field.  This fall the boys started attending daycare full-time, five days a week.  The daycare has a preschool and toddler age programs and the boys love their teachers.  Grayson will start going to the same daycare this upcoming spring.

The boys are showing a greater interest in numbers, letters, and art.  They love to color and put stickers on everything.  In an effort to try to control the kids’ bedtime routine and prepare for the new baby, the older boys now share a room complete with bunk beds.  They frequently quarrel, but are also each other’s best friend.  They are very proud older brothers and enjoy spending time with Grayson.

Merry Christmas!

And to top off the cuteness, here is (a scanned copy of) our Christmas photo card:

I can't wait to see what 2014 has in store for us...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
